As the Rent Guidelines Board considers rent increases to protect "mom and pop" landlords, consider @JustFixNYC's report on the myth of mom and pop landlords, who are as rare as unicorns in NYC.https://medium.com/justfixnyc/examining-the-myth-of-the-mom-and-pop-landlord-6f9f252a09c …

It seems like the easiest group to save. Carve out exceptions for people who are owner occupants or own 3-6 units total.

That’s not easy to do w/ a lack of LLC disclosure. Often LLs create new companies for each building they buy. We exempt owner occupants in good cause.

True, good point. Yeah maybe just exempt owner occupants and no one else. Seems more than fair especially in a city like nyc Our landlords own like 5 brownstones and are considered “mom and pop.” They’re not renewing our lease for no reason! (We suspect they don’t like kids)

This happens a lot! It’s why we are fighting for good cause eviction (http://www.right2remain.com ) — I can’t tell you how often LLs try to just make someone move bc they have children. We need a lot of help!! Would love to talk more abt getting involved.
