how do you define “social housing?”

- Publicly owned - Publicly funded - Democratically controlled - Run at a scale that rivals/undermines the market power of the private real estate industry

i appreciate this, esp top 3 bullets but i would love more clarity on point 4, which is vague: how does one “rival/undermine power?” what does that look like? and shouldn’t that mission also include protecting already existing deeply affordable homes and expanding rent control?

re # 4: small scale interventions (for eg: a 12-unit-CLT) don't challenge RE at scale and therefore end up being forced to operate by same market rules as private housing in order to survive re: expanding rent control - i fight for it literally every day

i don’t understand what you mean with #4 but i need to research more; what about existing affordable housing buildings with much more than 12 units & receiving subsidy? you’re not fighting for existing rent control in soho noho: doesn’t all low income housing deserve protection?

I once again don’t know what you mean. Yes, there is tons of for profit “affordable housing” at large and small scale that receives subsidy! I believe social housing means interventions that set the trajectory of the market, not just the site.

I don’t agree with your “protection” frame, nor do I agree with your “rent control = low income housing” frame.

i’m not presenting any “frame” i appreciate this conversation and your time but please don’t twist my words or put phrases in my mouth i’m referencing what housing looks like in working income neighborhoods and why it does need to be protected
