don't want to wade into housing discourse which i usually (miraculously, somehow) stay above but the whole "affordable for whom" narrative amongst progressive housing orgs seems like it has been a major strategic misstep for those of us who want to expand public/social housing

This is true in a lot of our work. A reform can stop hurting RIGHT NOW but sell out or set back our long term fight! I see that happening a lot in rezonings, where the only option the left has is to oppose.

Agree! But we are not talking about a rezoning for actual social housing. We are talking about an essentially market rate, profit-driven rezoning. Are you saying that Soho/Noho will bring appreciable amounts of guaranteed affordable units to downtown Manhattan?
