gave up on trying to do a pull up for a month or two and just started a new pull up program and let me tell ya.. it sucks ass

Have you tried doing negatives? I've trained several people who thought they'd never do a pull-up by having them start with negatives (starting at the top and consistently working to lower yourself in a controlled fashion). It's the one neat trick that actually works.
