Lancaster, PA too. Across the country localist/municipalist organizing projects are struggling w this dynamic and it’s a super important thing for the left to understand and work thru in order to win.
I appreciate all of this - and you! I think the Council has done more on workers rights, climate, transportation & anti-discrimination in the past few years than the State ever has. And you can do really rad stuff at the Council level if you’re able to test the body’s powers.
There are areas where the State’s power is much stronger (housing & criminal justice for sure) but I just think the Council is an easier target for most other policy fights because of some of the reasons I listed in my second tweet. And we are always “in session”!
Oh this reminds me that running DSNY is incredibly fucking important and able to create well-functioning City agencies is a major thing we should look for in a Mayor. Bdb’s horrendous management style is a big part of his failure imo. (I don’t support Garcia but u get the point)
