There are two eviction moratorium bills in the NYS legislature: S8788B & S8667.
We enthusiastically support S8667 and are calling on the NYS legislature to go back to session and pass this bill! 1/8

(To make it easier to remember through this mini thread...just pretend the "B: in S8788B stands for "bad.") 2/8

DURATION: S8788B extends the moratorium til January 20, 2021. (Initially it was September 20, but it was recently amended.) S8667 extends the moratorium for the duration of the crisis (end of phase 4) PLUS one year. This means *critically* the bill moves with the crisis. 3/8

AND bc of the backlog in court, OCA has said that COVID-19 related cases (for rent owed starting Mar '20) won't be on the calendar until Jan '21. The simple fact: S8788 is unlikely to help a single NY fight their eviction. (The 26 senators signed onto it should know that.) 4/8

WHO IS COVERED: S8667 (our bill) covers commercial AND residential tenants, and foreclosures! S8788B (remember, "B" stands for "BAD") just covers residential tenants. And as described above, doesn't even really do that. 5/8

WHO PAYS FOR IT: Because 8667 (good bill, we love) covers commercial tenants & foreclosures, it pushes the social cost of the eviction moratorium up the ladder to those at the very top. Not small landlords. Not mom & pop businesses. Banks & corporate lenders. 6/8

NY's eviction moratorium expires in LESS THAN ONE MONTH. We need to take action to avoid a mass humanitarian crisis. Call your State Senator and join us! 8/8http://bit.ly/evictionfreeny
