The project’s proponents defended the hotly contested deal to give control of the public Bedford Union Armory to private developers by emphasizing that proceeds from market-rate housing on the site were needed to subsidize the community benefit.
But documents newly obtained by POLITICO show that the rec center was and remains almost entirely publicly funded, even as its price tag has gone up by more than 40 percent since 2016.
TLDR Laurie lied to an entire community and forced Crown Heights to swallow luxury development on public land to fund a rec center youth. That the city was funding anyway.
