Little #CancelRent thread.
Benjamin Warren organized his building (with @CASAbronx) in 2011-2014 against a private equity buy-up of his building and 50+ others in NYC. You can check out his story which was in @democracynow at the time here:https://www.democracynow.org/2014/4/10/wall_streets_land_grab_firms_amass …

The bdgs were in financial distress and tenants organized w
@nychange@NYCHomesteading and@CASAbronx to use the opportunity and convert the buildings to non-profit, tenant-controlled housing. We lost and 1500 homes were flipped to a new corporate owner.https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/bronx/tenants-left-dark-future-foreclosed-apartments-article-1.1594681 …1 reply 2 retweets 5 likesShow this thread -
We didn't have enough power or the right policy tools to win. But the housing justice movement is stronger now than it was 5 years ago, and so are tenants' rights! Thanks to HSTPA +

So as millions of homes are potentially underwater, we should remember the lessons from 2008-2014. Private equity has tons of dry power, and is waiting in the wings to buy up our homes. This is really not a drill!!

But Benjamin's granddaughter has revived the TA AND is organizing their building on a rent strike. As thousands of homes have a questionable future, they (and we) have a second chance to win. Heart-warming, even on a snow day in May. cc

We can bail out the landlords, or we can #CancelRent and invest in social housing at 1521 Sheridan and all over New York.
