    New York’s rent laws protect tenants from excessive rent hikes and stabilize whole communities. Rather than back away, policy makers should expand them.

    The tenants of buildings scooped up by a private equity-backed landlord that subsequently jacked up rents are organizing, and are hoping to get a major bill passed in Albany to prevent similarly unscrupulous property owners from doing the same to others.

    My thoughts on the bk half marathon today are that the race course was gorgeous and super fun to run and way better than the New York road runner version! But that there were not enough vols and staff to execute

    Housing is a human right. It shouldn’t be an investment vehicle to make the wealthy even wealthier. My landlord tried to raise my rent by 50%. In response, I organized a tenants union in my building. Thank you , , & for your support today.

    Most rent regulated apartments are in large buildings. Most of the property is owned by large landlords. For 5 years I sat on the rent guidelines board and never met a landlord behind on their mortgage because of low rents but met thousands of tenants fearful of being evicted!

    Vast majority of rent-stabilized buildings are not small properties. Most are 6+ unit buildings and others may have rent-stabilized units because the owners are recipients of 421-a or J-51 property tax exemptions. These aren’t small landlords. Many aren’t even individual people!

    small property owners can sell their extra properties. tenants cannot produce rent money out of thin air. there is literally no trade off here - the mayor is inventing a legally protected return on investment and tenants will suffer because of it

    Mayor Adams sounds like he's OK with rent hikes of 3-9% for rent stabilized apartments; says he's worried about small property owners. "We must be fair here - allow tenants to be able to stay in their living arrangements, but we need to look after those small mom and pop owners."

    needs to be more discussion of how “small landlord” rhetoric functions to protect the profit/interests of an industry that for the most part isn’t actually run by “small landlords” & doesn’t care about them. big real estate knows this works — it’s in all their talking point lists

    My former Assembly Member supports good cause, now my current Senator needs to!

    Good cause eviction is important. It’s also common sense. If my family’s old school south Brooklyn assemblyman, , supports it, why don’t you ?
