First things first. Kingsborough, like NYCHA developments across the city, is suffering from decades of defunding public housing. We can't afford any cuts to , and certainly no cuts to public housing $$$.

An important point on the costs of funding housing programs is that when we don't fund them, we simply magnify the costs and shift them to other parts of society, like healthcare, education, production. We pay for homelessness one way or another—the choice of how we pay is ours.

Everyone needs and deserves a home, and for social housing warriors, it's our duty to ensure that housing is made a human right. Not only does a universal program protect programs from financial ruin in the inevitable event of shifting political winds, it also fights segregation.

On the second, every example we have of successful social housing around the globe is near-universal. The US is unique in that right-wingers saw social housing as a threat to the market in the 30s and forced our program into financial instability by making it poor-only, slum-only

One the first question, the status quo is a patchwork of non-profits & for-profits collecting tax credits & community clout. Transformation in my mind is a scaled-up public sector that is not dependent on 5 (or more) year application/award/syndication processes.

The big questions I see are: 1. Who is the developer and owner? 2. Who is social housing for? 3. What do we want the housing landscape to look like in 2035? What must we do today to get there?

The housing bill could reverse two decades of chronic underfunding of our main federal housing programs. Relative to growth, funding for the programs has been on a dangerous downward trend as buildings have fallen into disrepair and homelessness has risen.
