Imagine being upset that you can no longer easily + dramatically raise regulated rents to harass working class tenants. If your entire business model is based on evicting people to make money, you deserve to fail.

When your foolproof business plan of “quickly and aggressively” evicting tenants from their homes and jacking up the rents to unaffordable levels doesn’t pay off... you truly do hate to see it

I'm still in awe of Friday's victory when we passed the strongest rent regulation laws in New York state history. Here are my remarks from the floor as I voted YES to protect tenants statewide 👇🏻

IT’S OFFICIAL: has signed the strongest package of tenant protections New York has seen in almost a century! We would have never gotten here without the tenants. You stood up against decades of injustice & said in one voice: housing is a right.

For too long, power was tilted in favor of landlords. But today we leveled the playing field, bringing stability to tenants across NY - whether they live in an apartment in my district in the Bronx, in a single family home in Nassau County or in a manufactured home upstate.

This is such a huge victory for our organization, whose roots go back to ACORN fighting foreclosures. Our members, organizers, our coalition partners, our whole staff threw down for this once in a generation opportunity to win PERMANENT rent protections for tenants. WE DID IT!
