Some of the things HJ4A fights for with little to no controversy are definitionally much larger giveaways to the real estate industry than any rezoning. I’m not necessarily 100% comfortable with this, which is why I like to talk about it!

At the end of the day, I think we are doing the right thing because the economic, social, and moral costs of homelessness are far too great. I want to have this type of conversation (about power, costs, etc) about other types of housing policy!

Also, you know, it’s not really the vouchers fault that they subsidize real estate. They could be a stable operating subsidy for social or even public housing, and that would probably be a good thing.

Vouchers are the agential expression of privatization of the social housing issue and embody oppression as feature. Political games must not be played with homeless people as pawns. Therefore, we must push for expanded social housing and not dilute the message with vouchers.

vouchers are an operating subsidy for housing. they don't work that well and can oppressive when individualized. but at a building level scale, they can be pooled and serve as a big operating subsidy.

on the point of social housing: i completely agree that mass, universal social housing is the goal. but also 92,000 people cannot wait for how long that will take

of course. no housing advocate would say "all or nothing" on social housing but without a clear transition pathway the Section 8 cash machine and other subsidized non RS housing programs do not inure to the benefit of the tenant who remains trapped in housing insecurity.

agree, but I have also walked near 100% subsidy building such as the marine park terrace in LIC and here in East Harlem and observed squalor, denial of renewals, failure to accommodate disabilities and all sorts of oppression.
