In NY people can’t use vouchers bc: - landlords don’t want to take them EVEN THOUGH it’s $ for them, and EVEN THOUGH NY has source of income protection. They care more abt having absolute power over tenants than $. - there aren’t enough vouchers. to go around anyway … (1/3)

One of the reasons that housing voucher holders are unable to use those vouchers is because the value of their vouchers has not kept up with rapid rent increases. 1/

But most of all: renters don’t really like them! the experience of having a voucher can be stabilizing, but more often it is demoralizing, forces you to make choices to stay in subpar housing or w in no-to-low income employment, etc. (2/3)

Changing FMRs might help, but doesn’t address any of these core issues ^ It’s time to admit vouchers are a (currently necessary) solution of last resort, don’t work all that well, and invest in new public housing (3/3)

Isn't it also true that a voucher is often used for a apt that costs more than the voucher? Therefore the tenant pays the difference, inflating the cost of that apartment and inflating the rental market in general.

You don’t speak for landlords Ms Weaver. You have no idea the issues we may have dealing with voucher programs and city and state agencies.

Agree to rent the apartment to a tenant without a voucher, it starts cash flowing in a couple of weeks. Rent it to a voucher holder and you can wait two to six months. This is well known to anyone who has dealt with a voucher.
