Something I am increasingly realizing is not well understood is how little *real* capacity there is for development work across the public sector. Like literally people who know how to do it and are willing to do it for public sector salaries.

This is part of why I get excited when I see something like Atlanta's new mayor saying "I'm replacing half the housing authority board—and I want them to build". Like, who and how? I am optimistic—literally I just want to know so we can replicate it.

If you're an expert in real estate development there is little incentive to work in the public sector (building public housing, eg) other than posi vibes and maybe the pension. well, i do think bringing real estate folks into the public sector is also challenging from a PR perspective, even if they want to do it.

Yeah. I wonder if this is an aspect of a larger thing where many people don’t conceive of affordable or public housing as “real estate development”

I mean the way that the Atl mayor is speaking is not at all dissimilar from the way almost all candidates for office NYC speak (I’m particularly thinking deBlasio)
